Mato Grosso do Sul registrou um aumento populacional de 5,25%, atingindo 2.901.895 habitantes em julho de 2024, segundo atualização dos dados do Censo 2022 divulgada pelo IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística). Na contagem anterior, de outubro de 2023, o estado tinha 2.757.013 habitantes. O crescimento foi superior à média nacional, que ficou em 4,68%.

A nova atualização é essencial para o TCU (Tribunal de Contas da União) calcular o FPM (Fundo de Participação dos Municípios). Campo Grande, a capital, teve um aumento de 6,28%, alcançando 954.537 habitantes, enquanto Dourados cresceu 7,09%, chegando a 260.640 habitantes. Em Corumbá, a população ou de 96.268 para 99.107, um aumento de 2,94%. Três Lagoas e Ponta Porã também registraram crescimentos significativos, de 7,02% e 6,04%, respectivamente.

A revisão populacional do Brasil, anunciada pelo IBGE na semana ada, indicou que o país tem 212.583.750 habitantes, um crescimento de 4,68% em relação aos números ajustados de 2023. Apesar do aumento recente, o IBGE prevê que a população brasileira começará a diminuir a partir de 2042, com um declínio estimado para 199,2 milhões de pessoas até 2070.

As atualizações populacionais são fundamentais para ajustes em indicadores sociais, econômicos e demográficos, além de serem usadas pelo TCU para a distribuição de recursos federais através dos fundos de participação dos estados e municípios.
